In a world still grappling with the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, a set of amendments to the International Health Regulations (IHR) was adopted during the World Health Assembly in May 2022.

While these amendments have garnered limited public attention, they hold significant implications for global health governance.

18-Month Rejection Period

Each nation has been granted an 18-month window to accept or reject these amendments. This rejection process entails sending a letter to the World Health Organization (WHO) to decline the proposed changes.

Shifting of Sovereignty and Power

The root of the issue can be traced back to 1948 when power and sovereignty were transferred from national legislatures (Parliament, Congress, Senate) to appointed delegates within each nation. This shift weakened the connection between the people and their representatives.
